In my previous post, I discussed general preparation for internship positions. In this post, I will list some of the more common questions that are asked of grads interviewing for a school counseling position, suggested questions to ask your interviewer, and some websites for more information on how to interview for internships.
Questions For School Counselors
- Tell me about the ASCA model.
- What is your vision for an effective Guidance and Positive Behavior Program?
- How would you collaborate with a teacher to address academic difficulty?
- Describe how you would engage the family with the school system.
- Describe your individual work with students.
- Describe how you would handle a difficult parent.
Suggested Questions For The Interviewer
First of all, the wrong answer to “Do you have any questions?” is “No.” Remember, you are very interested in this site and of course you have questions!
Here are some examples to consider:
- What style of supervision is provided?
- How much time is spent individually with clients vs. paperwork?
- How many clients would I see per week? What is the typical load?
- Who will I be training with?
- Tell me about the typical working hours and day-to-day operation. What is a typical day like?
- What is the philosophy on training? Are there opportunities for in-house training?
- Do you expect any changes in the next year or so? (changes to organizational structure, funding, population, etc.)
