Counseling Spotlight: The Milton H. Erickson Foundation
The Milton H. Erickson Foundation traces it’s routes back to 1974, when a young and passionate psychologist named Jeffrey K Zeig, PhD had a noble goal. He wanted to gather mental health professionals together for the sake of education and growth. For 6 years, Dr. Zeig and his colleagues trained and mentored under Milton H. Erickson M. D., the world’s foremost authority on hypnosis.
From there, to express his gratitude (since Dr. Erickson never charged his students), Dr. Zeig organized the first Congress. This lead to the establishment of a more formal non-profit educational foundation…
“The Milton H. Erickson Foundation was incorporated October 29, 1979. Unfortunately, Dr. Erickson died nine months before the Congress but was able to appreciate that 750 had already registered. The Congress, held in December of 1980, attracted more than 2,000 and was the largest meeting ever held on the topic of hypnosis.”
In the more than 30 years since, the foundation has grown significantly to add more conferences and advance the education of professionals in the field. Conferences include those on brief therapy, couples therapy, and even an Evolution of Psychotherapy conference. From humble beginnings, the Milton H. Erickson Foundation finds itself among most globally recognized and influential organizations in the field of psychotherapy. All of this is possible through the hard work and support of registrants, faculty, downers, and others passionate about the Foundation’s mission.
Their mission being: “To promote and advance the contributions made to the health sciences by the late Milton H. Erickson, MD. The Foundation is dedicated to training health and mental health professionals through conferences, workshops, and programs.”
Best of the Counseling and Mental Health Web: Mental Health Minnesota
Each episode we award a site or organization as the “Best of the Counseling and Mental Health Web”… as selected by Mastering Counseling Podcast listeners! Whether you’re a current mental health professional, or a student studying to become one, there are so many great resources out there discussing counseling and mental health. Some of these resources could even help your clients and be worth recommending to them.
As a reminder, if you ever have a suggestion for a resource or organization we should recommend, drop us a line!
This episode, we’re happy to recognize Mental Health Minnesota. Founded in 1939, Mental Health Minnesota was the state’s first mental health advocacy and education organization. They are a non-profit and non-partisan organization, and an affiliate of Mental Health America.
Their web site, mentalhealthmn.org is a fantastic portal to their work, and what particularly impressed us. Not only can you find out more about who they are and what they do, but tyou can also learn how to get involved and what legislative work they are doing on the ground. You can also donate to help with their mission on their site.
Mental Health challenges are complex, and there unfortunately isn’t one simple solution for addressing such large issues. That’s why an organization like Minnesota Mental Health providing great information is so key.
The best thing, in our humble opinion, about their web site is the wealth of information about mental health in general. Be it mental health in the workplace, mental health in young adults, common diagnosis, or individual stories of recovery… for someone working in the field or even someone with mental health challenges themselves looking to learn more… the information provided is priceless.
Huge congrats to Mental Health Minnesota – and keep up the great work.
