The title of this post may look boring, but it contains some interesting and vital information for counselors!
Because Florida is my home state, many of the stats listed here will be for Florida (sorry, non-Floridians!)
Prevalence
- 1 in 6 women in Florida are raped at some point in their lives.
- 41.8% of women in Florida have been victimized by sexual violence other than rape (unwanted touching, etc.)
- 42.2% of those who were raped were under the age of 18 during the first completed rape.
- For men, 20.4% of men in Florida experienced sexual violence other than rape.
- More than a quarter of male victims who have been raped were raped prior to age 10.
Reporting Rates
The National Women’s Study Replication, funded by the National Institute of Justice, in 2005 found that nationally only 18% of rapes were reported to law enforcement. Only 10% of drug or alcohol facilitated rapes were reported.
Women and Men with Disabilities
- Women with cognitive and mobility disabilities had approximately twice the rate of sexual and physical abuse in their lifetime.
- A study done in Massachusetts found the prevalence of lifetime sexual violence victimization was 13.9% among men with disabilities vs. 3.7% among men without disabilities.
Military
According to the Department of Defense statistics gathered by the Service Women’s Action Network (SWAN):
- 3,158 military sexual assaults were reported in 2010, down 2% from 2009.
- Only about a quarter of these occurred during deployment to a combat zone.
- Only about 13.5% of sexual violence survivors report the assault.
- In 2010 alone, over 19,000 sexual assaults occurred in the military.
Children
- 6.1% of all children surveyed had been sexually victimized in the past year.
- Adolescents aged 14-17 are most likely to be victimized, with nearly 1 in 6 in the past year.
- More than 1 in 4 adolescents had been sexually victimized, mostly by flashing by a peer, sexual harassment and sexual assault.
