Host Question: What are the prerequisites to get accepted into a masters in counseling program? What are the steps or degrees that come before that masters in counseling part?
Guest Answer: Generally, undergraduate degree in psychology, education is social work or sociology, any of the humanities type degrees. And then you need to have GRE, A lot of programs require a GRE or some kind of pre graduate school test. Each program has their own requirements. You do have to have a certain number of credits in psychology. So if you didn’t get a degree in psychology, you’ll have to take courses maybe out of community college or online, and then typically you’ll need some sort of experience, whether it’s volunteer or professional, to show that you have a desire and knowledge of working with people.
Guest Answer: Most masters programs are going to require a successful completion of a bachelor’s degree. Usually any major doesn’t have to be a specific major. Most programs will require either a minimum of 2.5 or 2.75 GPA. Some programs are a little higher than that, and then most programs will require the completion of either the GRE or the MAT, which is kind of the alternate graduate exam. There are some counseling programs that are actually going test optional in recent years and are admitting graduate students without one of those tests, but most still require it. And usually a personal statement. And then it’s not a requirement, but a lot of counseling programs are looking for on your resume any previous experience that you’ve had working with people in general.
Guest Answe: A bachelors in a related field. And for lots of programs it’ll be a GRE. The program that I did not require a GRE, but it did require a bachelor’s. There may be some type of placement test or there may be nine hours that you do where you have to maintain a 4.0 GPA in that 9 hours, credit hours to continue on with the program.
