Guest Answer: Similar to family and similar to school counselors, so this is going to be somebody who specifically works with children and adolescents and kind of encompassing maybe some of the substance abuse as well as some school counseling aspects because they may also be dealing with, well, how do you show up in school? What are your secondary plans? But this is somebody who is pretty much only dealing with children and not mixed ages.
Guest Answer: So master’s in child counseling would focus specifically again on child development, and it might not have the direct licensure to working in a school, but you would see an emphasis on play therapy and child development. A child counselor might be working within a, you know, organization that supports families for example, if you were working in a domestic violence shelter, you could be the child counselor. That is like supporting children that have experienced this trauma. Same thing with foster care system, like kind of any organization that’s working to support children and families, but it might not actually be like a school setting as often where child counselors will practice. And then there’s also quite a bit of demand in private practice. And you see this again, sometimes when parents are going through a divorce or there’s a death in the family, there’s some kind of trauma that’s kind of bringing the family to take a child to counseling. Therapists that have a specialty in child counseling may launch their own private practice.
