Host Question: What is something that you love about counseling?
Guest Answer: I love watching children progress. I love watching them have those light moments when something finally lands that we’ve been working on or we’ve been talking about.
Guest Answer: I love the moments when you’re working with a client and they suddenly put things together and just like there’s a weight that’s lifted. But then also the, you know, like Oprah Winfrey calls it the ‘aha’ moment, and I love watching that process.
Guest Answer: I love being able to see students or clients reach their goal, working hard towards their goals, overcoming obstacles and seeing their changes they’ve made for the better, and seeing them just come out on the other side of any of the issues that they’re going through.
Guest Answer: I love the concept of active listening. Counseling isn’t like advice giving per se. It’s actually really sitting with connecting with another person and being able to really actively listen and engage with that person. And I think that is what I actually value the most about counseling. It’s just the ways that you’re able to authentically engage with another person. I think the other thing that I really value is this belief that ultimately people are the experts of their own lives. And so the role that you’re playing. And as a counselor again is not to tell people how to solve this problem that they’re facing, but actually empower them with the resources that they already have inside of themselves.
