Host Question: What is a masters in mental health counseling degree?
Guest Answer: A master’s in mental health counseling is probably one of the most common that you’ll see. That’s your therapist and things like that. Those are the people who help you get through your depression, your anxiety, maybe your ADHD or bipolar disorder, and help give you coping mechanisms to get you through your day to day life. Maybe they prescribe medication and maybe they don’t just depending on their level of education, but just giving you tools so that you can learn how to regulate yourself.
Guest Answer: So a master’s in mental health counseling you can imagine it is kind of being the general rest of the counseling profession. It’s a general counseling curriculum in the DSM and theories of counseling. Usually for counseling students, there’s a little more flexibility around some elective coursework. The career opportunities, I think, are also very broad, and this could well prepare you for some of these everything from a outpatient treatment facility, for someone navigating substance abuse to a domestic violence shelter, or to a organization that supports homelessness to a child Development Center. I mean, that’s a very general degree. So I think there’s actually a lot of different spaces that you could use that degree to pivot into. And a lot of that depends on where you get your clinical practice complex.
Guest Answer: A master’s in mental health counseling focuses more on the truer or purer forms of counseling theories, whether it’s cognitive behavioral therapy systems theories. There’s a lot of different counseling theories. So this is where you get the training in those theories, and then you work in a mental health clinic or a hospital or a mental health facility, and you work, you specialize in certain areas, whether it’s depression or anxiety, and you specialize in an area and you work with clients dealing with those problems within that specialty.
