Host Question: What was your favorite class or just best part of your master’s in counseling program?
Guest Answer: One of my favorite classes was a school counseling for diverse groups. And so just really delving into the fact that what works for one demographic may not and probably won’t work for another. As a woman of color, it’s important to me that professionals understand that you have to be able to curse Hill to watch your client needs. That was really great to learn. I also really liked learning about the theories of practice, so just different techniques to use. When I’m sitting across from a student and maybe they’re not being super forthcoming or they’re a little bit shy and just ways to get them to come out in ways to get them to look at their own problems. They don’t even really realize that I’m using a theory, but it’s definitely a skill that I learned in my program.
Guest Answer: My favorite were clinicals. In my program, we had to complete a year long, 20 hour a week clinical or practicum as what we called it. And so I really enjoyed that experience. It was in my last year of graduate school. I really enjoyed working with in a school, getting a feel for how the school counseling job works, and working under a supervisor at the school. But then also we had weekly processing groups with my fellow classmates. We were all at different schools around the area, and then we’d come together once a week and we’d with a professor and we’d talk about what we’re learning, what our challenges were supporting each other and growing as professionals.
Guest Answer: Favorite class would probably be abnormal psychology because I love learning about all the kinds of mental health disorders and the behavioral patterns that go along with them and learning how to diagnose. Love that class. But I think overall it’s just the interaction with my peers because they ended up with some lifelong friends.
Guest Answer: The first is the basic counseling technique class. I wish that I had taken that class like years before, before I went into the class earned in the basic practice of counseling that has translated into so many other jobs and parts of my life. So I think there was just so much that I took away from that one course. The other favorite part of my grad school experience in counseling was just the community and connections, and I feel like I learned a lot from my classmates and really formed a connection. There’s also a lot about the program that’s just very personal. When we were in the internship portion, we would actually tape with a client’s permission, but we would tape a session with a clan and we would have to listen to each other’s sessions and give feedback. So there’s just ways that I really connected with classmates that feels like very special and unique. I can’t exactly compare it to any other, like, educational experience that I’ve had before. Our sense.
